With over 80 miles of footpaths and scenic cycling routes, including sections of the Tour de Yorkshire, it’s perfect for outdoor adventures. The estate also offers year-round events, workshops, and interactive trails, making every visit a new experience.

Our History
Built in the 17th century, The Devonshire Arms became part of the Bolton Abbey Estate in 1753 under the 4th Duke of Devonshire. It was the 5th Duke who shaped the estate’s legacy, creating miles of footpaths to showcase the estate’s beauty.
Poets and artists, including Wordsworth and Turner, soon flocked to the area, captivated by its charm. By the 19th century, the Royal Family visited for grouse shoots, and the inn expanded to accommodate guests, stabling 20 horses and four carriages by 1840.
The arrival of the railway in 1888 and motorcars in the early 20th century brought even more visitors, leading to the creation of The Cavendish Pavilion, which continues to serve countryside lovers today.
At The Devonshire Arms Hotel, a major refurbishment in 1981 overseen by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, added new bedrooms and introduced artwork from Chatsworth’s renowned Devonshire Collection.
